Let's be very clear, here. The Supreme Court of the United States is made up of nine justices. Eight of these worthies have the job title, "Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States." The ninth has the title, "Chief Justice of the United States." Not "Chief Justice of the Supreme Court."

Like the President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Chief Justice is the head of his branch of government. He has the administrative charge of every federal court in the country.

You will hear phrases like, "First among equals," and "It's really just a psychological difference." (I heard both of those remarks on NPR this morning.)

Believe what you want, but underestimate the influence of a Chief Justice at your peril.

Just sayin'
