My 'hood, Columbia City, now has a free WiFi cloud, courtesy of the City of Seattle and their socialist tendencies. The U District has it, too, but, really, who the hell cares about the U district?

I am in the Columbia City Alehouse, where the WiFi works marginally from the window seats. Clearly, like everything else in Seattle, it pays to be farther north...

So there I was, sitting in the Alehouse, when shannonac shows up, and so we catch up for a while as we hadn't seen each other in about 5 years. Shannon asks me a question about the signal flags that I flew over my desk while I was still working at Speakeasy. Well, that was a long time ago, too, but I did write that up on a web page once. Since we were sitting in this city wifi cloud, I pull up the page. ( http://www.muppetlabs.com/~chris/signals.html if you must know, but that's not really the point of the story. )

Then this vaguely familiar-looking gentleman walks up and politely asks if we're using the city wifi, and how it's working out. I explain that it "almost works", but we're kind of on the edge of the coverage and it's a little slow. The gent then introduces himself. He's Dwight Pelz, who is the county councilman for my district. He's running for city council next election, and he just wanted to check in with the happy citizens using the city services. (Vaguely familiar as we had shook hands a couple of years ago at a park dedication behind my house. I'm sure he'd be more familiar if I watched TV or something...)
